Thai smile Restaurnat is owned by Anong & her husband Thamrong. Whilst Anong was living and working in Bangkok, she loved dining out, and always practised to cook the dishes she liked from various restaurants in her day-off. As a result, she is able to cook many famous Thai dishes at a level equivalent or very similar to restaurants in Bangkok in which those particular dishes are famous for.
Since they moved to live in New Zealand, they have dined out in many Thai and Asian restaurants. However, they find that Thai cuisine served in western countries are more often than not, cooked to please the western tongue rather than cook in an authentic style. As a result, most Thai food served in Western country are sweet and lightly spiced, because the fear that western people may not like the authentic Thai taste.

So Anong came to the conclusion that to succesfully distinguish the taste of Thai cuisine from western cuisine, it is not necessary to abandon usage of all the herbs and spices.
Thai cuisine can still be authentic even though we reduce the level of spiciness to the level that western people are able to cope. In another word, we still use other core indredients to the fullest extent to maintain authenticity. The only ingredient we reduce is chilli. So in this way western people can enjoy authentic Thai taste at the lesser degree of fieriness. And this taste is becoming more popular in Thailand itself too, because the new generations of Thai people alse do not prefer Thai food to be a fiery as the former generations.

So rest assured that all of the dishes in our menu will be as authentic as Thai food can be, because that is our policy to assure our standard of excellence. Thai Smile Restaurant is the only Thai restaurant in the entire South Island to be awarded Thai Select Certificate from the Thai Prime Minister's office. This certificate is given to the company with outstanding product. Our product category is authentic Thai cuisine. In an other word, the prime minister of Thailand had given all the consumers the sign of assurance that our cuisine is not only authentic, but also tastes outstanding amongst other authentic Thai restaurant. The Minister of Export Promotion of Thailand also has given Thai Smile Restaurant a Thailand's Brand Certificate, to assure our authenticity and also as a symbol of appreciation for Thai Smile Restaurant that we are promoting Thai cuisine in the way Thai food should be, and should taste like. The examination was done twice throughout New Zealand in 2000 and 2004 and Thai Smile is the only Thai restaurant in the South Island which qualified both times.
